Lab Q & A
When can I expect my physician to receive the results of my lab tests?
Most tests are performed at IVCH and the test results are faxed or made available to your physician the next day. For specialty tests not done at IVCH, results can be expected anytime from a couple of days to several weeks, depending upon the test. Culture tests such as urine cultures, throat cultures and stool cultures typically take 2-4 days before results are reported.
Should I fast for my blood work?
If you have a lipid profile ordered, a 12-14 hour fast is recommended. Fasting blood glucose (blood sugar) requires an 8-10 hour fast. For all other testing, fasting requirements are determined by your physician or health care provider.
May I call the lab for the results of my test?
It is laboratory policy that results are not give to patients via telephone. Results should be obtained from your health care provider. This will give you the opportunity to ask questions regarding your test results.
